A Theory of Social Agentivity and its Integration into the Descriptive Ontology for Linguistic and Cognitive Engineering

The agentivity of social entities has posed problems for ontologies of social phenomena, especially in the Descriptive Ontology for Linguistic and Cognitive Engineering (DOLCE) designed for use in the semantic web. This article elucidates a theory by which physical and social objects can take action, but that also recognizes the different ways in which they act. It introduces the “carry” relati...

Formalizations of Functions within the Dolce Ontology

In this paper we give formalizations of two engineering concepts of technical functions and present in more general terms the project of supporting engineering functional reasoning by means of ontological analyses. The concepts that we formalize are the concepts of function as defined in the Functional Representation approach by Chandrasekaran and Josephson and in the Functional Basis approach ...

The Ontology of Signs as Linguistic and Non-linguistic Entities: a Cognitive Perspective

It is argued that the traditional philosophical/linguistic analysis of semiotic phenomena is based on the false epistemological assumption that linguistic and nonlinguistic entities possess different ontologies. An attempt is made to show where linguistics as the study of signs went wrong, and an unorthodox account of the nature of semiosis is proposed in the framework of autopoiesis as a new e...

Verification and Modularization of the DOLCE Upper Ontology

This paper outlines the reductive modularization and verification of the Descriptive Ontology for Linguistic and Cognitive Engineering (DOLCE). The ontology makes distinctions between enduring and perduring entities which is reflected in the resulting reductive modules, in contrast to previous work done to generate a consistency proof for DOLCE. We present our approach to verify DOLCE with math...
